I had never been to a “Bridal Shower” before. Should I have Googled the term beforehand to check out the etiquette and expectation? No! Websites about “Bridal Showers” have their own agenda and it was much more fun to just go. The bride is an artist, so I embroidered a cover for a new drawing book and added a tin of Inktense Pencils. The event was a good opportunity to meet the distaff side of the Bride’s Family. We chatted over cups of tea/ coffee then gathered around a table laid out with sea-shell paint palettes, paint brushes, stencils and cards in order to paint a card for the bride. On a second table we were able to write a secret message for the bride and fold it up to make a triangular ‘envelope’. There were snacks laid out on the table in the kitchen. We barely had enough time to get it all done before the bride sat down to open her gifts.
While we were “showering” the men went out on a boat to catch fish. They brought back eight “porgies” which I know as “sea bream’. We barbecued them the following day for lunch.
That evening both Families gathered together for a “Lobster Fest”. The weather stayed fine and it was warm enough to eat in the garden. When it grew dark the youngsters waved around giant sparklers outdoing each other with their patterns. Then came dessert. Quel surprise! We all flocked out of the garden gate to find an Ice-Cream Van parked there ready to serve us. Fantastic.
